Stop the world I want to get off!

Hello Friend,

If you’re feeling moody, restless, like you’re coming undone welcome to the club!

Over the past month I’ve witnessed friends, colleagues and clients experiencing powerful shifts, me included. This is because the Cosmos just completed a massive eclipse season and currently we have several planets in retrograde.

As per my Soulstrology guru, Ambi Kavanagh, “Retrogrades bring back past issues or people for resolution, releasing or reconciling and often this results in magic and miracles.” But before we experience the magic we may get knocked on our arses as old wounds come to the surface.

If astrology isn’t your thing our current political, economic and natural environments are examples of the tension being brought about inviting us to examine ourselves and heal what’s still wounded.

How do we heal our pain? Gently because just like a physical laceration, yelling at yourself to “just get over it” doesn’t make the skin heal any faster. In matters of the Spirit, space, time and compassion are the tenets for our restoration.

First get acquainted with your pain. There’s a Buddhist practice called Compassionate Abiding which entails sitting with your discomfort (i.e. anxiety, rage, jealousy etc.) and allowing yourself to fully experience it. Sounds terrible, I know, but in the words of author and Buddhist nun Pema Chodron,

“If you don’t know the nature of fear you cannot be fearless.”

Here’s how to practice Compassionate Abiding:

Once you recognize that you’re hooked by an emotion or thought pattern take a deep breath in. Allow the feeling completely and feel yourself opening to it. The in-breathe can be deep and relaxed. Anything that helps your let the feeling be there and not push it away. Then still observing the emotion breath out. Allow yourself to relax, giving the feeling space. You are not sending the feeling away on the out-breath rather you are releasing the tension around is, ventilating it and becoming aware of the space in which the discomfort is occurring.

Pema Chodoran’s book “The Places that Scare You: A Guide To Be Fearless in Difficult Times” is my go to manual when I'm in the darkness before the miracle. She speaks right to the heart of suffering and I always feel more grounded and hopeful after taking in a few pages.

In honor of my own healing and the current retrogrades which ask us to do all things “RE” - reevaluate, reconsider, renew and rebirth I’m taking a social media break for the next 2 weeks. I'll be turning inward and compassionately abiding.
